How Do We
Move Forward?
“When we destroy something created by man we call it vandalism,
but when we destroy something created by nature we call it progress.”
Nature-Based Solutions
A Nature-based Solution (NbS) uses natural systems to help solve environmental and social problems, benefiting both people and nature. These solutions improve things like health, ecosystem strength, and biodiversity.
Green Infrastructure
Green infrastructure is a nature-based solution that leverages both natural and human engineered systems to solve environmental problems like flooding, droughts, and water and air pollution. It is a tool that is used by developers, planners, and anyone involved in making land use decisions.
Smart Growth
Smart growth refers to a set of planning principles and policies used by planners to ensure that new developments are sustainable and equitable for everyone, with an emphasis on reducing the extent of urban sprawl and instead focusing development on core areas to create walkable and transit-oriented communities, while protecting natural resources.
Smart Growth
Conservation development is an alternative development approach that prioritizes the protection of natural areas like wetlands, forests, rivers, prairies, and other open space. These developments dedicate a percentage of the total development area, typically more than 50 percent, to be protected as open space.
