Nature-based Solutions

A Powerful Tool
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are actions that restore, manage, or protect natural ecosystems to address societal challenges. This innovative approach addresses social and environmental challenges while providing hope for both people and nature. NbS offers numerous benefits, including enhanced human well-being, increased ecosystem resilience, and support for biodiversity, making it a powerful tool in the pursuit of sustainability.
In April 2022, Executive Order 14072 directed the U.S. government to expand the application of nature-based solutions to strengthen the resilience of lands, waters, wildlife, and communities against climate change. The United Nations Environment Assembly also recognizes NbS.
Examples include:
Conserving Forests
Conserving forests regulates the climate, preserves biodiversity, and ensures clean water and carbon storage.
Restoring Wetlands
Restoring wetlands enhances carbon capture, reduces erosion and flooding, protects against storms, and supports endangered species. It also boosts ecosystem services by improving water quality and providing food.
Rehabilitating Grasslands
Rehabilitating grasslands increases carbon storage, improves water resources, and benefits both wildlife and livestock.
Agroforestry and Regenerative Agriculture
Agroforestry and regenerative agriculture help farmers diversify their operations and increase their income while improving water quality and soil health.
NbS in Cities
Nature provides solutions for cities, inspiring urban policies that foster resilient communities. Nature-based solutions (NbS) not only enhance urban green spaces and support sustainable development but also play a vital role in climate adaptation, benefiting both ecosystems and people. Integrating nature into urban areas improves quality of life by reducing temperatures, purifying water, and enhancing air quality, thus offering a promising future for our cities.
Think of Nature-based Solutions as Earth’s own innovations to keep people and the planet
healthy and balanced.
